A method for decoding a color mapping table coded as a hierarchical tree of octants arranged in levels is disclosed. The method comprises for at least one current octant of said hierarchical tree: a) decoding (S10) at least one data item representative of a color parameter associated with said at least one current octant; b) associating (S12) said decoded at least one data item with an index in the color mapping table, wherein the index is determined at least based on a maximal split depth of the color mapping table and based on a level position of said at least one current octant in the hierarchical tree.
