PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide techniques for inspecting a web and controlling subsequent conversion of the web into one or more products.SOLUTION: A system comprises, for example, imaging devices 26A to 26N, an analysis computer 28, and a process control system 4. The imaging devices 26A to 26N image a web 20 to provide digital information. The analysis computer 28 processes the digital information to identify regions containing anomalies of the web 20. The process control system 4 subsequently analyzes the digital information to determine which anomalies represent actual defects for a plurality of different products. A web inspection system can preferentially apply different application-specific defect detection recipes depending on whether a given anomaly is a repetitive or irregular anomaly.
