[Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Compounds consisting of (a) from 2 to 4 amide units of formula:- in which R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl (1-6 carbon atoms) and x is 1-6 and (b) 1-3 polyvalent hydrocarbon chains having 2-30 carbon atoms, one of the free nitrogen atom valences each amide group being satisfied by a free carbon atom valence of the chain and the other being satisfied by a hydrogen atom or a free carbon atom valence of the same or a second hydrocarbon chain; or (c) a tris(polymethylene)- amine group of 6-18 carbon atoms, one of the free nitrogen atom valences of three of the amide units being satisfied by one of the three free carbon atom valences of the tris(polymethylene) amine and the other free nitrogen atom valences being satisfied by hydrogen atoms; or (d) a N,N,N1,N1-tetra(polymethylene)alkane diamine group of 10-30 carbon atoms one of the free nitrogen atoms of each of four of the amide units being satisfied by one of the four free carbon valences of the diamine and the other free. nitrogen valences of the amide units being satisfied by hydrogen, are used as antioxidants for lubricants of the aliphatic ester type e.g. di- (2-ethylhexyl)-azelate and pentaerythritol tetracaproate; animal and vegetable oils e.g. linseed oil, fat, tallow, lard, peanut oil, cod liver oil, castor oil, palm oil, corn oil and cotton seed oil; hydrocarbons e.g. gasoline, natural and synthetic diesel oil, mineral oil, fuel oil, drying oil and cutting fluids and waxes. Examples are given of the use of the antioxidants in the treatment of (a) a mineral oil (Ex. 9); (b) lard and cotton seed oil (Ex. 10); (c) gasoline (Ex. 11); (d) paraffin wax (Ex. 12) and (c) lubricating oil (Ex. 13).
