PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition with excellent wet ink adaptability, forming a coat of excellent surface finish, hardness, resistance to retort treatment, scratch resistance after retort treatment, hardness in hot water and processability. SOLUTION: The water-based coating composition comprises a copolymer resin (C) obtained by solution-polymerizing a monomer component containing respectively predetermined amounts of a polymeric monomer (a) selected from 4-20C alkyl(met)acrylate and styrene, an N-methylol acrylamide derivative monomer (b), a hydroxyl group-containing polymeric monomer (c) and an acid radical-containing polymeric monomer (f) in the presence of a copolymer (A) with acid value of 10 or less by a monomer component containing respectively predetermined amounts of the monomers (a), (b) and (c) and a polymeric monomer having epoxy group or aryl group (d), the copolymer resin (C) being neutralized and dispersed in an water-based medium with a benzoguanamine resin (D).
