[Also in Division F2] A thin wall flexible bearing liner is made from a metal strip by forming the strip into arcuate blanks and performing two successive cam pressing operations on the blank, the first of which finishes the external surface and the second of which finishes the internal surface. The first operation is performed by apparatus such as described in Specification 1,180,742, between a female part with a concave surface which engages the whole external surface and a male part shaped to engage only a part of the internal surface. The male part has shoulders to engage the parting faces of the blank. The second operation is performed between a female part 10 and a male part which engages the whole area of the blank. The male part has a head 12 with a shank 13 extending through a block 15 to abut a press platen 8. Helical compression springs extend between the block and the platen to hold the head 12 in the female part when the pressure applied by the press is relieved. The block 15 and the head 12 may be integral and an ejector may be provided to remove the blank. The blank may be tapered at its lateral edges before pressing. The blank may have a steel backing, an intermediate layer of leadbronze or aluminium-tin and a final layer of tin or lead based alloy, e.g. lead indium or lead tellurium. The blank may have oil holes and chamfers and a locating projection. |
