A device and a method for detecting a foreign material are provided to increase detection efficiency by discriminating the foreign material found in a flat display panel, the foreign material found in an optical table or a backlight, and defect. An optical table(110) includes a through hole(112) at the center. A clamping unit(120) clamps a panel loaded to an upper part of the optical table. A panel transfer unit(125) transfers the panel by horizontally moving the clamping unit. A backlight(114) provides a perpendicular light to the panel through the through hole at a lower end of the optical table. A camera(140) obtains an image of the panel at the upper part of the optical table. An image processor(150) compares and analyzes the obtained image. |
