A pulverulent commodity, e.g. flour, soap powder, &c. in a container 2 is compressed by inserting a suction device 12 into the commodity to withdraw entrained air. The compressing apparatus has a drum 4 rotating around the sprocket shaft of a conveyer (3), Fig. 1 (not shown), carrying filled open topped bags 2. A stationary cover 18 has vacuum and compressed air connections leading to a valve block 17 rotating with the drum. The suction devices 12 are connected to the block via tubes 14. Each suction device 12 moves vertically on a rail 6 as a roller 8 runs in a spiraled channel 9. The devices may have a porous ceramic or metal tip and are pivoted at 11 and spring biased at 26 so that cam roller 24 contacting a serrated surface (25) causes them to vibrate and shake off accumulated powder. As they each enter a bag, air is sucked out, the devices are then vibrated and subjected to a short blast of air while still in the flour and a further short blast at a higher pressure when lifted clear. |
