PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction stir welding system and a friction stir welding method, which can prevent wrong detection of the failure of a rotary tool. SOLUTION: The friction stir welding system 1 detects the acceleration of a rotary tool 3 by an acceleration detection sensor 201 arranged inside a tool holder 4 to be in contact with the rotary tool. By the arrangement of the acceleration detection sensor 201, the electric noise of the control signal of a motor from an output signal output from the acceleration detection sensor 201 can be eliminated. Then, in the friction stir welding, in the case the waveform pattern M of an output signal for measurement output from the acceleration detection sensor 201 and sample lines H1, H2 are crossed, it is determined that a failure is generated in the rotary tool 3. Thus, an instantaneous output signal from the acceleration detection sensor 201 produced upon the failure of the rotary tool 3 can be securely captured, and the wrong detection of the failure of the rotary tool 3 can be prevented.
