PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging device driving method that reduces smear effects without adding a special circuit. SOLUTION: The imaging device driving method is configured as follows. An imaging device 5 has transfer electrodes V1-V4 that are vertically arrayed above a vertical charge transfer path 52 so as to control charge transfer operation in the vertical charge transfer path 52. Smear suppression driving operation that applies transfer pulses to the transfer electrodes V1-V4 in order to transfer charges is executed in such a manner that a standby place of charges in the vertical charge transfer path 52 for a horizontal transfer period for transferring the charges through a horizontal charge transfer path 53 is at the vertical charge transfer path 52 provided below the transfer electrodes V4, V1 other than the transfer electrodes V2, V3 adjacent to a B photoelectric conversion element, which has a detection wavelength on the shortest wavelength side, in a large number of photoelectric conversion elements 51.
