<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which contrast and luminance can be improved. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device 1 includes a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix, in which a polarizing plate 19, a TFT substrate 11, pixel electrodes, an alignment layer 13, a liquid crystal layer 14, an alignment layer 15, a counter electrode 16, a color filter layer, a counter substrate 18 and a polarizing plate 20 are disposed. The planar form of each pixel is a dogleg feature having extended sides in directions inclined with respect to the absorption axes of the polarizing plates 19, 20, which effectively improves the aperture ratio. A data line 11a formed on the TFT substrate 11 has a parallel portion 11a-1 in a display aperture region of each pixel. When light from a light source is reflected on a side face of the parallel portion 11a-1, the reflected light is absorbed by the polarizing plate 20.
