<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To implement an apparatus and a method which restricts the use of substandard memory card and prevents a serious error. <P>SOLUTION: A detachable information recording means which has failed in authentication between the information recording means and an information processing apparatus is determined to be a substandard product, and functions of the information recording medium, such as outputting a warning, prohibiting data recording/reproducing using the information recording means, and turning off a power source of the information recording means are selectively performed for the substandard products, according to a data recording capacity and the like.
