The method involves comparing an instantaneous value (S2) of a valve slide (20) with a desired value (S1) of the valve slide in an active condition by constant valve (1) influenced hydraulic axle (2). An alarm is issued in case of a too large deviation of the instantaneous value from the desired value, which indicates a malfunctioning of the depth control of the constant valve. An active condition of the hydraulic axle is an active stop and an active movement of the hydraulic axle. An independent claim is included for a constant valve for a machine.
