PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device which is used for an image display device, is adapted to maintain the lifetime of a light source at a sufficiently long lifetime, particularly in using a solid light emitting element as the light source while the maintenance of sufficiently high luminance of illumination light and the improvement in color reproducibility and the satisfactory maintenance of the white balance of a display image are made possible, and is adapted to avoid making the signal processing dificult in the image display device. SOLUTION: The image display device includes a plurality of the light sources 2G1, 2G2 which emit light of different wavelengths in a wavelength region of a bandpass for green, a control means 4 which controls lighting of the respective light sources 2G1, 2G2, and an optical path conversion means 10 which converts an optical path relating to at least one of the light from the respective light sources 2G1, 2G2 and which guides it to the same spatial optical modulation element 1G.
