A panoramic obstacle detection and warning system for a helicopter HS is disclosed. The system uses radar beams -3 to 12 for the purpose of detecting obstacles and the proximity of the ground. A set of radar sensors RS0 to RSn are mounted on the fuselage structure of the helicopter HS, the sensors arranged to operate at varying wavelengths according to whether they are providing short-range or long-range detection. The radar signals, representing range information, are provided with an individual identifier and are compared in a central identification and evaluation unit 23 with predetermined warning thresholds. The signals are assigned to corresponding scan sectors and are displayed on a cockpit display 27. |
