1,268,843. Treating rails to increase adhesion of wheels. BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD. 16 June, 1970 [4 July, 1969], No. 33786/69. Heading B7J. [Also in Division H5] A D.C. plasma torch, suitable for cleaning railway lines and improving wheel adhesion, comprises a rod cathode 1, two axially separated, annular anodes 7, 16, and a plasma chamber 10 between the anodes, and includes means for introducing an inert gas such as argon coaxially around the cathode 1, as at 12 and/or 15, and means for introducing the main gas such as air substantially tangentially and downwardly into the chamber 10, as via passages 18. A pilot arc is struck between electrodes 1, 7, and is then transferred from anode 7 to anode 16 to provide the main arc, switch 22 being opened when the main arc is established. The arc rotates round the anode throat 20 as the compressed air is introduced tangentially. The torch components are held together by longitudinal bolts (not shown) or embedded in insulating material. A heat-resisting annulus 17 separates anodes 7, 16, and provides the gas passages 18. |
