A medium for the growth of vancomycin-resistant enterococci comprises an energy source, one or more selective agents and a krebs cycle intermediate. A separate medium comprising two chromogenic substrates for the differential identification of E.faecalis and E.faecium is disclosed. The specific embodiment is a base medium (see table on page 21) comprising the selective agents: aztreonam, erythromycin, polymyxin B, cefoxitin, amphotericin B (see table on page 22) and vancomycin together with alpha-ketoglutaric acid; the medium further comprises galactopyranoside-based and phosphate-based chromogenic substrates together with kaolin to render the medium opaque. Methods for the culture and identification of E.faecalis and E.faecium using the medium are disclosed. |
