Heading C2C. #-Methyl mercaptopropionaldehyde is prepared by reacting methyl mercaptan with acrolein in the presence of a catalyst of general formula R 3 XY, wherein X denotes an element of the 5th main group of the Periodic Table, excepting nitrogen, and Y denotes O or S, and R represents a monovalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical. The amount of catalyst used may be from 0À1-5% by weight, based on the acrolein used and the temperature may be from -10- +50‹ C. Catalysts used in the examples are Ph 3 PS, (n-C 4 H 9 ) 3 PS, Ph 3 PO, Ph 3 AsO and Ph 3 SbO. |
