PURPOSE: A circuit and a method for stopping an elevator are provided to prevent double shocks due to braking power of an automatic speed regulator/ rope control device. CONSTITUTION: A circuit and a method for stopping an elevator is composed of a power sensing relay(14), a capacitor(13), and a secondary relay contact(15b). The power sensing relay senses the momentary interruption of electric power, and the capacitor supplies charging power to a solenoid via the first relay contact(15a) which is operated by the power sensing relay when instant interruption of the electric power is generated.
