PURPOSE: A method and a device for generating an image data stream, a method and a device for reconstructing a current image from an image data stream, an image data stream and a storage medium carrying an image data stream are provided to combine low on chip memory requirements in an encoder or a decoder, low bandwidth requirements and quick processing time about motion compensation. CONSTITUTION: A method for generating an image data stream comprises the following steps. Search areas in a reference image are assigned to source macro blocks of a current image. Maximum matching values in the search areas and remaining values corresponding to the maximum matching values are determined. The determined remaining values are encoded in a data stream. A processing sequence of macro blocks depends on a location of a search area in the reference image in at least one step of the above steps.
