Reduction of coke formation in the product gas flowing in the transport pipe downstream of a tube header of a hydrocarbon steam-cracking furnace, e.g. the pipe conveying the cracked gas to a quench zone is effected by collecting the gases leaving the furnace in a header in which it is divided into roughly parallel part streams, esp. by a baffle plate, and by subsequently combining the part streams, so that spiral flow of the combined gas stream is avoided.
