A track 1 in combination with a gas cushion vehicle 3, Fig. 1, is formed in one piece of concrete of generally T-shaped lateral cross-section, whereby the distance D between the vertical side portions 4, which co-operate with the lateral guidance cushions 6 of the vehicle, is substantially less than the width W of the horizontal upper portion 2, which co-operates with the supporting gas cushions 6 of the vehicle, the cushion 6 being formed by units 5 as disclosed in Specification 1,165,732. The track 1 is supported above ground level by reinforced concrete pylons 1a. As shown in Fig. 2 the vehicle is driven by a linear electric induction motor comprised of pole units 12 on the vehicle which coact with a rail 10 resiliently secured at 11 to the bottom of the portion 2, the motor being supplied with current from conductors 24 on the track and pick-up means 23 on the vehicle. A brake pad 21, a roller, or an air cushion, is provided on the vehicle 3 to engage the bottom of the portion 2 to restrict aerodynamic lift. The vehicle cushion units 5 are supplied with air under pressure from a compressor 8, driven by a variable speed engine 9, via pipes 7. The upper surface of the track portion 2 may be convex and the side walls 4 may slope downwardly and inwardly towards each other. |
