An apparatus and a method for obtaining transmission diversity in a broadband wireless access system using a multiple transmission antenna are provided to remove a need that a transmitter notifies a receiver of information of a transmission antenna, thereby reducing an overhead. A diversity controller(304) classifies the entire frequency band into blocks divided by a fixed number of continuous tones. The diversity controller outputs data signals to be transmitted through tones of corresponding blocks to subcarrier mappers(306-1,306-2) connected to an antenna using a corresponding block. The subcarrier mappers per the antenna map the data signal on a subcarrier of a corresponding block.
