PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve switching performance of a power split transmission. SOLUTION: In a method for open loop control or closed loop control of the gear ratio of a power split type automatic transmission, this transmission includes a driving shaft driven by an engine, a variator 12 having the continuously variable gear ratio, a gear set 14, an output shaft 10 and at least two control clutches K1 and K2, and the variator 12 and the gear set 14 are mutually connected so that an adjusting area of the variator passes through in one direction in a first gear ratio area and in the inverse direction in a second gear ratio area, when passing through the whole gear ratio area of a power split type transmission, by using the control clutches. By this switching strategy, abrasion of a winding means 12 is reduced, and comfortable high switching is also attained between the gear ratio areas.
