PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element of high contrast, a volume-modulated coloring material suitable for composing the optical element, and a volume-modulated coloring composition using the volume-modulated coloring material. SOLUTION: The volume-modulated coloring material is formed of polymer gel containing a light absorbing member for absorbing visible light, and a white pigment for scattering visible light, and swollen or shrunk by absorbing or discharging liquid according to stimulation. The optical density of the polymer gel in the swollen state is almost the same as the optical density of the polymer gel in the shrunk state.
