<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize black display by a simple and secure method. <P>SOLUTION: A control circuit 50 supplies image data specifying black gradation to a data line drive circuit 24, reads the initial value of a reference voltage Vref from a memory 70, and supplies a control signal indicating the initial value to a reference voltage generating circuit 60. On the basis of the image data DATA and the value of the reference voltage Vref output from the reference voltage generating circuit 60, a data line drive circuit 24 generates a data signal indicating the reference voltage Vref and supplies it to each unit circuit U. When a potential corresponding to the reference voltage Vref is applied to the gate of a drive transistor Tdr, a drive current Iel flows in a light emitting element E.
