1357335 Hydrogen-rich gas IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 June 1971 [22 July 1970] 35513/70 Heading C5E Hydrogen is produced by reacting CO with steam at under 300‹ C. over a copper containing low temperature shift catalyst in discrete pieces characterized in that the catalyst is preceded by a bed of discrete pieces of a solid guard material that is more basic than ZnO or that such catalyst and such guard material are in admixture. The guard material may comprise a basic compound (e.g. an oxide, hydroxide or carbonate) supported on a carrier (e.g. alumina). The guard material may contain 0À3 to 0À6% by weight of the basic compound while the catalyst contains less than 0À25% by weight thereof. A hydrocarbon feedstock e.g. CH 4 , butane, naphtha or refinery gas may be reacted at 600‹ to 1000‹ C. to give a gas containing CO and H 2 which is cooled to shift inlet temperature and subjected to shift conversion over a catalyst as above which is protected by said guard bed. In the examples the guard materials are NaOH on Al 2 O 3 , a mixture of NaOH, ZnO, CuO and Al 2 O 3 or nitrates of Ba, Mn, Y or La on alumina.
|
