The device (101) has a light guide plate (114) arranged at a lower region of a liquid crystal panel (116) to reflect light polarized by a polarization plate (112). Another polarization plate (130) is arranged at an upper region of the panel to control amount of the light through the panel and has a polarization body. A positive A-film i.e. compensation film (120), is arranged at the lower region of the panel to change a polarization state of the light supplied to the panel by the plate. A phase difference value in a horizontal direction of the film ranges from 100 nanometer to 150 nanometer. The light is emitted by a light source e.g. cathode ray-fluorescent lamp, external-electrode-fluorescent lamp or LED.
