A printing apparatus for a web of pile fabric including a printing roll having a compressible absorbent cover material, a pressure roller adapted to force the fabric web into printing position against the cover material, and a meter roll having a hard surface, and uniformly spaced, uniform longitudinal grooves in the surface for receiving liquid dye, the hard grooved surface being adapted to squeeze the absorbent cover material on the printing roll to dispense metered amounts of dye into the printing roll cover material prior to printing the fabric.
