PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bill handling apparatus which reduces post-discrimination work by correctly discriminating a received bill. SOLUTION: The bill handling mechanism 1 includes: a bill input/output opening 20 for inputting and outputting a bill; a bill discrimination unit 30 for discriminating the received bill into an authentic bill, a fake bill, and a suspicious bill; a bill reflux storage 40 for containing an authentic bill; a fake bill storage 61 for storing a fake bill; a suspicious bill storage 62 for storing a suspicious bill; a first temporal reserve storage 31 for temporally storing and carrying out the authentic bill; a second temporal reserve storage 51 and a third temporal reserve storage 52 for temporally storing and carrying out the suspicious bill; a carrying path (11-18, 22, 23, 33, 71-74, 76) for carrying the bill between each reserve storage (31, 40, 50, 60) and the bill input/output opening 20; and a bill handling mechanism control unit 1a for controlling the carrying process on the carrying path. The bill discrimination unit 30 is located on the bill carrying path comprising carrying paths connecting each storage, the second temporal reserve storage 51, and the third temporal reserve storage 52.
