The method involves determining total current of an electric motor (10). The determined current is compared with a preset maximum allowed total current for the motor. A motor maximum current parameter limited to an allowed maximum value or a motor maximum speed parameter limited to the allowed maximum value is supplied to a motor control unit (18) i.e. microcontroller. The current parameter or the speed parameter is lowered so that the determined total current does not exceed the maximum allowed total current when the determined total current is larger than the maximum allowed total current.
