PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a program update method and system for communication terminal capable of performing a program update without interrupting a call service in a communication terminal such as IP telephone. SOLUTION: In this program update method for updating a program of a communication terminal selectively switching one of a plurality of different voice compression systems according to the specification of a counter part communication terminal through a communication network to perform voice communication. The program is divided and held as a basic module and a plurality of modules corresponding to the respective different voice compression systems. According to a program update request, at least one of the plurality of modules is set as an update object module, and an update module corresponding to the update object module is received through the communication network to replace the update module by the update object module.
