PURPOSE: An image display device and a method for operating the same are provided to exactly perform operation intended by a user if the device controls the image display device through a special remote controller. CONSTITUTION: A wireless communication unit receives a pointing signal from a special remote controller(S400). A coordinate value calculator calculates an x coordinate and y coordinate through the pointing signal(S405). A control unit display a pointer on a display according to the calculated coordinates(S410). If selected signal is inputted, the control unit display the pointer on the display by a pointing signal inputted during the predetermined section(S415,S420). The control unit performs the operation corresponding to the most calculated coordinate area(S425).
