A method and an apparatus are provided for releasing a fluid tight seal formed about a well bore perforation by a perforating and sealing tool. A pressure differential across the sealing means urges the fluid tight seal into engagement with a well casing adjacent a perforation. To release this seal and remove the perforating and sealing tool from the well bore, the pressure differential acting on the seal is eliminated by equalizing the pressures acting on the two faces of the seal. The equalization may be effected by bleeding high pressure fluid through the seal from the high pressure side to the low pressure side to a central aperture formed therethrough during the formation perforation step.
