There is described an apparatus adapted to automatically load and unload biological material test tubes into and from a capsule (9) suitable for the handling in a pneumatic mail system, said test tubes being supported by a test tube container (10) which may be removably accommodated in said capsule. Said apparatus comprises a loading and unloading interface (25) included in a conveyor adapted to automatically transport biological material test tubes, a receiving/dispatching station (6) for capsules (9) to/from various biological material collection departments and a receiving/dispatching station (16) for capsules (9) to/from biological material testing departments, devices (1, 2) adapted to handle arriving test tube containers and test tubes to be dispatched to a bench (3) comprising a loading area (5) and an unloading area (4) for test tubes and test tube containers, arriving material identifying and checking devices (21, 28), orienting devices (7, 17) for test tube containers, and a control unit (24) adapted to coordinate said devices during the loading and unloading operations.
