A residential flat plate concealed sprinkler for the fire protection of an area of between about 144 square feet to about 400 square feet, the sprinkler comprising an outer housing 14 having an inner surface defining a chamber 44, a body 42 at least partially disposed within the chamber 44, the body 42 having an inlet 24 and an outlet 26 spaced along a longitudinal axis AA, the outlet 38 having a minimum design fluid flow ranging from about thirteen gallons per minute to about twenty gallons per minute (13-20 gpm) and the inlet 24 having a minimum design input fluid pressure ranging from about seven pounds per square inch to about seventeen pounds per square inch (7-17 psi.), the body 42 including an inner surface 20 defining a passageway 22 for communication between the inlet 24 and the outlet 26, at least one guide 42b having a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end being coupled to the body 42 and the distal end having telescopic movement relative to the outlet in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis AA, and a deflector plate assembly 42a for distributing a flow of fluid over the protected area. The deflector plate assembly 42a is coupled to the distal end of the at least one guide 42b so that the deflector plate assembly 42a has a first position distal of the outlet and a second position distal of the first position. The deflector assembly 42a includes a plate with two lateral bores 82a, 82b disposed about the longitudinal axis with the at least one guide 42b engaged with one of the two lateral bores 82a, 82b, a projection member 60 coupled to the plate to define a proximal surface substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal axis AA and spaced axially from the outlet and a distal surface distal of the proximal surface and orthogonal to the longitudinal axis AA. The distal surface of the plate defines an oblong perimeter circumscribed about the longitudinal axis AA and further defines a major axis IVB and a minor axis VIC each intersecting the longitudinal axis AA. The two lateral bores of the plate are disposed along the major axis IVB and the oblong perimeter of the plate includes a pair of spaced apart parallel straight edges 86 opposed about the major axis IVB and two diametrically opposed arcuate edges intersecting the major axis IVB. The distal surface of the plate includes a plurality of slots substantially equiradially spaced about the longitudinal axis AA, with each slot having a substantially straight portion initiating from the perimeter and extending radially toward the longitudinal axis to define a slot length and further having a slot width, the plurality of slots also further defining a first slot group having a first slot length, and at least a second slot group having a second slot length smaller than the first slot length. The slots of the second slot group are evenly interposed between slots of the first group.
