PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of a DC component due to push-down. SOLUTION: When a polarity of a signal potential based on a potential of a counter electrode is defined as a write polarity in writing the signal potential, the signal potential is written along with the following two kinds of inversions: inverting the write polarity a plurality of times in a field period; and inverting the write polarity in each of a plurality of sub-field periods constituting one field period with respect to the write polarity in each of a plurality of sub-field periods constituting the next field period. A first total length of the sub-field periods related to one polarity is different from a second total length of the sub-field related to the other polarity, for consecutive odd- and even-numberd fields which are arranged in a chronological order.
