PURPOSE: A composition containing Empetrum nigrum var. japonicum extract for radiation protection is provided to suppress ROS(reactive oxygen species) generation and recover antioxidative elements. CONSTITUTION: A composition for radiation protection contains Empetrum nigrum var. japonicum extract as an active ingredient. The Empetrum nigrum var. japonicum extract is prepared using water or organic solvent. The radiation is gamma-irradiation. The radiation protection is caused by promoting antioxidative activity of tissues or cells in the body. The radiation protection includes suppression of intracellular DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, or protein deformation.
