<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable information terminal capable of performing smooth input operation by operation keys even if a large number of operation keys are provided on a surface opposite to a display surface of a display device. <P>SOLUTION: A portable information terminal comprises a display surface which is provided on a front surface of a display device and a plurality of operation keys which is arranged on an opposite side, that is a rear surface. The portable information terminal further comprises a half-depressing sensor for detecting that each of the operation keys is half-depressed and/or a touch sensor for detecting that each of the operation keys is touched by an operator's finger. When images of arrangement of the operation keys are displayed and it is determined, according to an input signal from the half-depressing sensor or the touch sensor, that a half-depressing operation or touching operation is performed to a certain key of the operation keys, a control section contained in the portable information terminal executes processing to change a display of an image corresponding to this operation key.
