[Also in Division F2] To form a socket on a pipe of thermoplastics material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, the pipe is heated to an elastically deformable state and pushed over a core 36, the outer edge 52 of the pipe pushing in front of it and in opposition to a spring a sleeve 38 which when the sleeve 38 abuts a stop collar on a sleeve 37 actuates a limit switch which moves the sleeves to the left as shown in the figure, the pipe contracting to form the socket and being cooled. Spring loaded pins 44 carried by a longitudinally movable rod 51 prevent shifting of a supporting ring 41 which together with supporting and sealing rings 40, 42 is assembled on the core prior to insertion of the core into the pipe. In a modification, supporting rings (77), (82), Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), and one or more removable filling rings (83), or sealing rings, are inserted into the pipe which is rendered elastically deformable by heat and secured in an hydraulically actuated clamp (79) so that the end of the pipe rests against a plate (85). The latter is swung aside and the pipe is pushed by an hydraulic cylinder (78) on to a heated core (61) formed with bores (67), (68), (69) and (70) and a central bore (64) connected to a vacuum device whereby a subatmospheric pressure is produced between the pipe and the core to cause the pipe to conform to the core. A water spray (62) cools and solidifies the pipe. |
