1383306 Diphenylamines IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Feb 1972 [19 March 1971] 7292/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Diphenylamines of formula wherein R1 to R10 represent hydrogen or halogen atoms or cyano, nitro, perhalocarbyl, carboxy, sulphonamido, hydrocarbyloxy, hydrocarbylthio or hydrocarbylamino groups, provided that (a) no more than 3 of R1 to R10 are H atoms, (b) at least 4 but not more than 9 of R1 to R10 are halogen atoms, and at least one of R1 to R10 represents a substituent other than H or halogen, except that R1 cannot be nitro or amino where R2 and R4 is fluoro, bromo or methoxy and (c) at least 7 of R1 to R10 must be halogen atoms when a nitro group and a trifluoromethyl group are both present unless a group other than halogen, trifluoromethyl or nitro is also present and (d) no more than three of R1 to R10 are nitro groups. The compounds may be prepared by treating a compound of formula with a base, e.g. sodium hydride, and then reacting the treated compound thus produced with a compound of formula wherein R1 to R10 have the meanings hereinbefore defined. The process may be carried out in a diluent or solvent, e.g. D.M.F.
