<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission that enables gear parking by avoiding the up-lock of a gear even at the stop of an engine. <P>SOLUTION: When the up-lock occurs at the automatic transmission 30 (S1), and even if the engine 10 stopped (S2), a speed change stage of the automatic transmission 30 is shifted to a prescribed speed change stage different from a speed change stage which is required by a driver at a shift lever 61 (S5). Thus, "displacement" is generated at the engagement of a gear row in the automatic transmission 30 due to a synchronized mesh mechanism, and a possibility capable of avoiding the up-lock is expanded. Then, a speed change is retried so as to coincide with the speed change stage required by the driver at the shift lever 61 (S5).
