SULFONATED NATURAL RUBBER COPOLYMER AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new sulfonated natural rubber copolymer which is useful as a catalyst promoting an in-water esterification reaction efficiently in a simple process using a main raw material having no environmental load.

SOLUTION: A sulfonated deproteinized natural rubber-styrene copolymer having a sulfonic acid group is manufactured by graft-polymerizing a styrene-based monomer on a natural rubber and then sulfonating the grafted rubber after the natural rubber is deproteinized. It is preferable that the styrene-based monomer is graft-polymerized onto the natural rubber and then the grafted rubber is sulfonated in an organic solvent after the natural rubber is deproteinized in a latex state.
