Adjustment of the position of the baffle plate 37 changes the position of the vortex which forms about an axis e-e' and thus changes the separation characteristics. The lower part 20 of the column may have a rectangular cross-section and the upper part 26 may be cylindrical. The chute 31 is provided with an air lock feeder 32. The apparatus may be used to classify refuse, the heavy particles falling down the column and onto a conveyer (5) and the light particles being entrained by the air stream and subsequently removed therefrom in a cyclone (9) Fig. 1 (not shown).
