<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device and a vehicle head light unit using the same capable of reducing a voltage applied to a switching element on an inverter circuit being compact in size and simple in configuration. <P>SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device includes: a DC power supply 1; a DC-DC conversion circuit 2 that generates output voltages Vo1 and Vo2 on both ends of smoothing capacitors 241 and 242 connected to each other in series; an inverter circuit 3 that supplies an alternating power to a discharge lamp which is connected between a connection point of switching elements 31,32 connected in series and a connection point of the smoothing capacitors 241 and 242; and a multi-step rectification step-up circuit 7 that charges the smoothing capacitor 241 using a voltage generated on a secondary winding of a transformer 21. Under no load, the multi-step rectification step-up circuit 7 raises the output voltage Vo1 to a no-load voltage VoN, maintains the switching element 31 ON and the switching element 32 OFF, and applies the no-load voltage VoN to a discharge lamp 5 to thereby start the discharge lamp 5. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
