<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical instrument capable of transmitting signals to a controller even when using any of two or more handswitches according to the direction of the surgical instrument. <P>SOLUTION: The surgical instrument 3 includes a housing 10, an end effector carried by the housing, and one or more connections adapted to connect the surgical instrument to a controller such as an electrosurgical generator. The housing includes a plurality of handswitches 13A, 13B, 13C and 14A, 14B, 14C located at different rotational positions around the housing.
