PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a response of the switching of a variable valve mechanism, in an internal combustion engine with the variable valve mechanism. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine includes intake/exhaust valve spool valves 75I, 75E, valve lifters 13E, 13I driven by hydraulic pressure controlled by the spool valves 75I, 75E, and a valve stop mechanism 80 which is driven by the valve lifters 13E, 13I, and switches forms of the valve mechanism. A cylinder bore 3a is formed so as to be inclined while turning around a crank axial line, the intake/exhaust valve spool valves 75I, 75E are arranged at the sidewall 161A of a rear cylinder head 4r in the crank axial direction, and an intake-side main oil passage 163 and an exhaust-side main oil passage 173 are formed which send and feed pressurized oil to the valve lifters 13E, 13I from the intake/exhaust valve spool valves 75I, 75E along the rear wall 161B of the rear cylinder head 4r in a position lower than pressurized oil exhaust ports 77E, 77I.
