PURPOSE:To obtain a thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester useful as a molding material, by controlling the contained moisture of an acyloxy aromatic carboxylic acid, etc., to be fed to acidolysis at a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:(A) A polyester is subjected to acidolysis with (B) 30-90mol% acyloxy aromatic carboxylic acid under condition of <=100ppm moisture content [based on the total weight of the components (A) and (B)] of the reaction system. The resultant product is then polycondensed to suppress the formation of temporarily reactive phenolic hydroxyl groups by hydrolysis of the acyloxy groups and afford the aimed copolyester in a short time.
