PURPOSE:To improve the recording density characteristic by forming a slot or a stripe-shape ruggedness having a prescribed surface coarseness and causing the magnetic anisotropic in a direction at a right angle to the direction of the slot or strip. CONSTITUTION:After the slot or stripe ruggedness having a surface coarseness of 10Angstrom -800Angstrom is formed on a base 1 in the direction of recording track, the magnetic film 2 having the vertical magnetic anisotropy is formed on the base. In forming the slot or stripe ruggedness having a practical surface coarseness is formed as a magnetic recording medium, the magnetic recording having the magnetic anisotropy is obtained at a right angle to the direction of slot. In selecting a recording track in parallel with the slot direction, the planer component of magnetization of a bit recorded by a magnetic head is not butted at the bit boundary, steep magnetization transition is attained and the recording density characteristic is improved.
