A head-mounted display provided with display units (15,16) for displaying an image, a switching unit (6) for switching between a display state for displaying an image on the display units (15, 16) and a non-display state for not displaying an image on the display units (15, 16), brightness adjusting units (13, 14) for adjusting the brightness of the image displayed on the display units (15, 16), and an external light detector (5) for detecting the amount of external light. When the non-display state is switched to the display state by the switching unit (6), the brightness adjusting units (13, 14) adjusts the amount by which brightness is changed per unit of time in order to increase the brightness of the image from the brightness of the display units (15, 16) in the non-display state to the brightness of the image displayed on the display units (15, 16) in the display state, the adjustment being made in accordance with the amount of external light detected by the external light detector (5). |
