1. A method for activating a mechanism by one or more signals representing one or more symbols, comprising:
activating a first device containing a transmitter to retrieve a first code from a plurality of codes in a memory on the first device, the first code determining a first shift register based sequence generator on the first device to generate the first sequence of symbols; transmitting the first code by the transmitter in the first device to a receiver in a second device that is spatially separated from the first device; the receiver in the second device receiving the first code; configuring on a processor in the second device a sequence detector in a first configuration, the first configuration is retrieved, based on the first code, from a plurality of detector configurations stored in a memory on the second device; generating the first sequence of symbols by the first shift register based sequence generator and transmitting the first sequence of symbols by the transmitter in the first device; the receiver in the second device receiving the first sequence of symbols; processing the first sequence of symbols received by the receiver in the second device by the sequence detector in the first configuration on the processor in the second device; and activating the mechanism in the second device when a presence of the first sequence of symbols is detected by the sequence detector in the first configuration on the processor in the second device.
